A month with the Macbook Retina

Well i’ve had the macbook retina almost a month now and what do I truly think?

Apple have a hit, well at least for me they do. I can understand every review i’ve read of the machine so far, and they are all correct, even the negative ones!

Its been an absolute joy to walk out of the house with an incredibly light laptop bag these last few weeks, so much more convenient than the Macbook Retina Pro, and of course having no connectivity cables in my inventory the bag has been even lighter!

The keyboard has taken a little more time to get used to, its a very different feel to the keyboards i’ve used in the past, the keystroke is incredibly shallow, and theres a tendency to bang the keys hard, after having had 3 or 4 macbook pro’s its been an interesting conversion.

I can’t ascertain any real differences between the old style touchpads and the new force feedback one not the Macbook Retina, its as good as any Apple touchpad, and knocks all other trackpads out of the running, but i’m not surprised by that.

As expected the machine is not the fastest, even though its on the slow side (in comparison to my desktop mac), its no slouch, and seems to run Outlook 2016 with ease, and pretty much anything i’ve thrown at it, admittedly i’ve not tried processing either photos or videos.

Its an awesome machine for RDP sessions, which is probably where I spend 90% of my computing time. I’ve not noticed any real slow downs on the machine when browsing, even with multiple tabs open, it just seems to keep on trucking.

My only complaint so far is the lack of USB-c devices that have been released. I’ve yet to find a reasonably priced hub or adaptor that allows pass through of power, so its either a case of plugging into the mains, or plugging in USB / Network cables. I really cant justify £60+ the Apple multiple output adaptor, though I do have a hub ordered via kickstarter, which doesn’t look like it’ll be with me until the end of August at the moment.

I’ve a few more small devices to put reviews up for in the coming weeks, both of which are USB-c cables.
